Lowell Thomas Awards

I am delighted to announce that Carol Beckwith (FI’81) & Angela Fisher and John Hare (FI’98) have all been honoured to receive the prestigious Explorers Club Lowell Thomas Award.  This year’s awards are dedicated to The Extinction and Preservation of Flora, Fauna and Culture.  The award ceremony will be held in New York during the weekend of 22 – 24 October 2010.

On behalf of the British Chapter I would like to congratulate Carol & Angela for their lifetime’s work documenting African tribal rituals and ceremonies and to John for his dedication and devotion to protecting the critically endangered wild Bactrian camels of the Gashun Gobi desert.

Dr. Christoph Baumer (FI’04) “Traces in the Desert - New Archaeological Discoveries in the Taklamakan Desert, China”

Wednesday 21 July 2010, 7:00 pm - The Royal Society for Asian Affairs, Canning House, 2 Belgrave Square, London SW1

Christoph Baumer will present the results from his 5th Taklamakan Expedition (EC Flag No. 60) in northwestern China in fall 2009. There the expedition explored the ancient inland delta of the former River Keriya which disappeared ca. 800 BCE.

The expedition’s highlight was the discovery of a large necropolis dating from the Early Bronze Age (2000-1500 BCE) which consisted of ca. 100 burials using canoe-shaped wooden coffins. Most striking were some obviously Indo-European looking mummified skulls with sunken eyes, pronounced noses and reddish brown hair. The expedition identified many parallels with the equally old necropolis of Xiaohe located 600 km to the east in Desert Lop Nor.

Free entrance for Explorers Club members by kind permission of Col. Neil Porter, Secretary RSAA
